Asiana Historical Timeline

 

1993

9 December – TDG’s relationship with Asiana comes to life with the signing of an agreement to make Transnational Air Service Corporation (TASC), a TDG member company, the General Sales Agent (GSA) for passenger sales for Asiana Airlines.

 

1994

17 May – Asiana Airlines opens its office at the I-Care Bldg., Legaspi Village, Makati.

26 May – “The Jewel of Asia” makes its inaugural flight to Manila. Asiana Airlines schedules 3 flights weekly between Manila and Seoul.

12 July – Asiana Airlines receives its ISO 9002 certification.

 

1995

15 February – The Kumho Asiana String Quartet holds a concert at the Francisco Santiago Hall, PCIBank Bldg., Makati.

August – Asiana Airlines hires its first batch of Filipina flight attendants. Ten young ladies make up the group.

 

1996

May – A second batch of five Filipina flight attendants is hired.

November – Asiana Airlines and the Korea National Tourism Organization tie up for the Korea Shopping Travel Mart at the Manila Diamond Hotel. The activity is supported by tour operators from Korea.

 

1997

February – A Korea Welcome Tour is launched with a consortium of eight travel agents.

October – Asiana Magic Miles, a frequent flyer program for children is launched in Manila, on tie-up with McDonald’s.

 

1998

June – Mr. Yong Ki Hong (Asiana Airlines Regional Manager) is reassigned. Mr. You Jung Park is assigned to Manila.

 

1999

February – Asiana Airlines sponsors “Reminiscing 1,” a concert of Stephen Bishop, David Pomeranz and Michael Johnson at the Folk Arts Theater.

March to August – Asiana ties up with Citibank to offer promotional fares to the United States.

May – the “Circus Band Reunion Street Party” at Adriatico St., Manila is sponsored by the airline.

November – Sam Koo Park, President and CEO of Asiana Airlines, along with other guests from the airline’s head office, visit Manila.

December – An outreach program is organized at Alay ng Puso, a project of the Missionaries of Charity.

 

2000

January – The renovated office a De la Rosa St., Makati is blessed.

March – Asiana organizes a “Night of Stars” for its top travel agents at the Manila Diamond Hotel.

May – Asiana and Citibank tie up again to offer promotional fares to the United States.

May – Atty. Arthur P. Tugade, President and COO of TDG, and Mr. Sang Woo Noh, Senior Manager of Asiana Airlines, delegated by Mr. Sam Koo Park (Asiana Airlines CEO), sign an agreement forming Asiana Philippines GSA, Inc., a joint venture between the Kumho Group of Korea and TDG. The new equity partnership is tasked with developing both passenger and cargo markets and to become a vehicle for tapping other tourism and airline-related opportunities.

June – Mr. J. Roberto Delgado, Chairman and CEO of TDG, and Mr. Jae Il Kim, Managing Director for Cargo of Asiana Airlines, sign the agreement formalizing Asiana Philippines GSA’s appointment as Asiana’s cargo GSA.

July – Official start of the operations of Asiana Phils. GSA, Inc., a joint venture between the Kumho Group of Korea and TDG.

July – Asiana is the featured airline in the 4th Annual General Membership Meeting of the Network of Independent Travel Agencies (NITAS).

August – Asiana Phils. GSA, Inc. receives its ISO 9002 certification.

 

2001

January – A third batch of 14 Filipina flight attendants is hired.

February – Asiana sponsors “Reminiscing 3,” a concert featuring Patti Austin.

March – Asiana Phils. GSA, Inc. and American Express-Adventure International Tours, Inc. join the Travel Tour Expo 2001. Asiana brings in first class seats and gets flight attendants to serve food and to give a feel of the airline’s in-flight service.

September – the 5th General Membership Meeting of NITAS at the Dusit Hotel is sponsored by Asiana.

December – the airline’s annual Christmas party with its top travel agents is held in Barangay 201 Day Care Center, Kalayaan, Pasay City.

 

2002

February – Asiana, in cooperation with the Korea National Tourism Organization, joins Travel Tour Expo 2002.

April – Mr. Sam Koo Park, Vice Chairman of Asiana Airlines, visits Manila.

May – A fourth batch of 15 Filipina flight attendants is hired.
